The mission
Leave the lab ready for teaching.
This is practical, paid operational work. You will work with the maintainer crew and Dr Mohammed Dangor to prepare the B-Lab before scheduled undergraduate practicals.
Prepare stations
Organise instruments, probes, cables and breadboards at the stations assigned to you.
Check equipment
Notice missing, damaged or malfunctioning equipment before students arrive.
Report issues
Record faults clearly in B-Lab Operations so that the team can follow them through to resolution.
Finish on time
Complete the assigned work by the moment the practical begins, not after teaching has started.
Eligibility lock
Third-year reduced load or fourth-year standing.
You must be either a third-year student on a reduced Semester 2 course load or a fourth-year student. Second-year students are not eligible. Fourth-year students completing Design and Investigation Project may apply.
- Third-year applicants must check every published duty window against their entire Semester 2 timetable.
- You—not the selection team—are responsible for verifying this full-semester timetable check when applying as a third-year student.
- All applicants must be able to complete their assigned duties.
- Proof of Semester 2 registration is required.
A third-year student carrying the standard full Semester 2 course load is ineligible. Fourth-year applicants do not need to meet the reduced-load condition.

Own voice required
Write your biography and motivation yourself. They should be personal, specific and natural—not AI-generated. Shortlisted applicants may be asked to talk through what they submitted.
A photograph is not required during selection. The appointed maintainer will be invited to provide one for their B-Lab profile with separate permission to publish it.

Applicant working calendar
Know when the work happens.
The team prepares B-Lab before scheduled practicals. Individual maintainers are rostered for assigned blocks; you do not work every block. The current principal availability windows are:
Monday, 08:15–10:15Monday, 12:00–14:00
Thursday, 08:15–10:15Thursday, 12:15–14:15
Friday, 12:00–14:00
Actual dates follow the teaching calendar and may not occur every week. Reasonable notice will be given for confirmed changes. Before applying, mark only genuinely conflict-free windows in the form.
The standard
Reliable work keeps you on the crew.
Continued participation depends on punctual, careful and satisfactory performance. Maintainers must attend assigned duties, complete every allocated station and communicate promptly when a genuine emergency occurs.
Repeatedly missed, late or inadequately completed duties may result in removal from the B-Lab maintainer team, subject to applicable University processes.
